The panel that created a story!
Hey there! Okay, so with finishing volume #5 of Lloyd and the Bear, completing the finale of Fenton Hud with issue #4, attending Sequential Scotland Comic Con (which was great!) and a few other things going on I’ve been my usual good self and not posting much on here (I’m sorry but y’know, busy? But busy in a good way!)
So, with starting work on issue #21 of Lloyd and the Bear I wanted to share what the inspiration for it was and it’s all down to this panel!
Right, let me explain a bit. So many years ago John Byrne came up with Alpha Flight #4 which was both cheeky and awesome in that it featured pretty much one character who wore white and was stuck in a snow storm so it was pretty much empty panel after empty panel(!)
It was a great issue and I wondered if I could try something similar with Lloyd stuck by himself on the ship in darkness.
I’ll be honest, the real reason for this was so I could put together a quick story and try to speed things along but it still had to work.
And so the story moved around a bit with it being Lloyd stuck on a powered down ship and talking to ‘Puts (as introduced in volume #4) but I ended up shifting that to a short at the back of Volume #4 (I mean, that could not hold an entire book)
Then it moved to Bear and Griff being stuck on the ship instead and being in some kind of danger but that really didn’t work (especially as I knew that issue #22 was going to be Bear-centric)
Theeeennnnn I went back with Lloyd but I quickly realised that this was not going to be a full issue set in darkness (I mean, that would be a push, right?) although I knew the ship would be damaged but then how? Having bounced around with some ideas (one of which was plenty dark involving pirates) I found a cause and after that left it for Lloyd to work out how to fix things!
Anyways, here’s the completed page which only has the one blackout panel (even thought I’ve realised there might be a few more before this issue resolves itself!)

PS. That final panel was redone three (THREE!) times! Geez… But hey, it’s done! (What do you think?)
