Not getting a signal in London is REAL!

Continuing with my commentary on issue #3 of Fenton Hud and I wanted to cover a few things with pages 15 and 16.

So first of all, the phone signal. As I’ve mentioned before I don’t plan the Fenton Hud books and put the story together in small 3 to 4 page scenes. But with this particular plot point I did go back and make a change to the opening pages and have Tabs not able to get a phone reception (originally she was waiting for an important works call which is what got Maya’s attention).

The top row is from page 16 and has Tabs trying to contact Fenton but as he’s at the coffee shop (that Tab was at previously) he’s not getting a phone reception (an annoying real thing in some places in this here London!)

Anyways, she’ll go on to leave him a number of voicemails after she’s seen Cuddles’ body which all happens off panel but ties up to Fenton’s timeline (as he’s running a bit behind) on page 16 with the missed messaged he gets when he leaves the shop.

So yeah, it was a great way to not only tie locations together but also create a running plot point through a good bit of the issue.

Oh, and as for Heston’s disguise and plan to kill Tabs – he was the barista at the coffee shop and if it wasn’t for Maya, Tabitha would have been poisoned. Go Maya!

PS. Heston had left the coffee store as soon as Tabs got taken away. You can see the other staff being confused where he’s gone in Fenton’s timeline back on page 5! Heston returning to the same location but in a slightly different disguise? That’s ballsy… or messed up – I’ll let you decide!

From kissy face to grizzly death

Okay, so with page 14 of Fenton Hud I got to draw my first ever kissing scene in a comic and WOW(!) I found that seriously tough! Like, to get both people in the shot evenly and make sure neither is hidden by the other? TOUGH!

Or maybe it’s just me but yeah, I really wanted to get this right so hope you all find it not only looked genuine but gave the feels.

And hey, after that we have Cuddles’ death (which worryingly wasn’t so hard to draw…)

So back when my better half was reading Fenton Hud #1 for the first time they mentioned that Cuddles was a bit of a Mary Sue and was a bit too skilled in a lot of different things. This stuck in my head and with issue #3 and deciding I was going to kill someone off it made sense that it was going to be Cuddles.

So yeah, I’m kinda saying that this wasn’t my fault…? So sadly Cuddles bit the bullet. Is it wrong that I love the second panel like A LOT?!?

Long time no post!

Hey there!

Okay, so I haven’t posted in an age and I’m not only sorry about that but I also kinda want to talk about it too.

I’m still working on Lloyd and the Bear and Fenton Hud and really enjoying what I’m doing but I’ve come to realise that that’s kinda the problem too! You see, when I’m working on my books they’ve got my full attention and it’s only when I’m finished for the day I realise I haven’t posted on either here or any other platform I use!

Sometimes I think about posting something while I’m working but then I just want to do one more bit of artwork and before I know it it’s late in the day and I want to get some food(!)

I don’t know how to get around that either so if I’m quiet (like some 5 months quiet – eek!) that’s why. (Sorry!)

While I’m here self-reflecting and all that I should probably mention that I won’t be doing MCM London in October. Now don’t get me wrong, I love MCM and will probably be visiting as a punter but the convention has changed and it feels like if you want to sell your books you really have to push them and become a salesman which is really not me! Much like the admin, I’m not a fan (and I was even a saleman one and boy was I bad at it!) and it’s taking me away from what I do enjoy – making my books!

I’ll still be doing smaller conventions and will keep an eye out for what other conventions are going on but for the moment it looks like I’m going to be a bit quiet this year. This does mean I need to update my online store which, again, is admin so might not happen straight away but it is on my list!

As for the books, I’ve just finished all the line work on issue #19 of LatB and need to do some hefty planning and design work for issue #20 and figure I might take a bit of time out and get some pages of Fenton Hud #4 done.

Who knows, maybe I’ll be able to distance myself enough to do some more posts? Maybe?

Knights of the magical light!

I really loved the (short lived) Visionaries toy line/comic/cartoon. It was so cool! I mean, knights and magic and science? What’s not to love!?!

Anyways, I’ve been feeling a bit nostalgic and wanting to try something different this weekend so I had some fun by designing new totems based on classic pop culture characters .

I admit, I had done the Tummi one an age ago but I really wanted to have some fun this weekend by setting myself a challenge of doing some more!

What do you think?

Page layouts, conversations and awkwardly sized characters…

Okay, so the current page of Lloyd and the Bear has been proving a challenge. To explain, We’ve got Lloyd and Griff trying to break through a force field that’s popped up while Rizos (who’s back after being introduced in issue #14) appears and has to explain her reason for being there while also not slowing down the action.

Now hey, that in itself is enough to deal with but Rizos also has to be positioned right of Lloyd and Griff AND I need to deal with angles that will get all the characters in while taking in to account how much taller Rizos is from the other two!
